How To Keep Mosquitoes Out Of Your Home Year-Round

Posted on

Mosquitoes will take every opportunity they have to latch onto your skin for a quick meal that typically results in pain, swelling, and serious itching for several minutes, sometimes even hours, afterward. So if you're like most folks, you'd rather keep the mosquitoes out of your house altogether than have to deal with the bites and aggravation. Unfortunately, the little flying creatures seem to be able to find their way indoors even when you're using screens where windows and doors are left open. The good news is that there are a few things you can do at home to keep the mosquitoes outdoors where they belong so you can enjoy your time inside uninterrupted. Try one or more of the following tips and tricks:

Incorporate Some New Houseplants

Many kinds of plants can be used to repel mosquitoes both inside and outside your home. You can plant a variety of effective options to place indoors on window sills, in corners, and on countertops. You can also plant your favorites near doors and windows outside to keep mosquitoes from getting close to household entrances. Consider one or more of these appealing options:

  • Catnip
  • Lavender
  • Marigolds
  • Citronella
  • Basil
  • Lemon Balm

If any of the plants you put in your home don't get at least partial sunlight in their designated spots during the day, it's important to move them to a windowsill or outdoors a couple of times a week to ensure that they get the lighting the need to thrive.

Make Homemade Air Freshening Repellent

Another excellent way to keep your home free of mosquitoes is to make some homemade air freshener using essential oils. Several types of essential oils are known to effectively repel mosquitoes and other insects, and they'll keep your home smelling awesome throughout the day too.   You can use essential oils alone or in combination with one another depending on how you'd like your household to smell – make use of the following options:

  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Bergamot
  • Thyme

To make your air freshener, just fill small decorative bowls with water and then add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the water. Mix the oils into the water using a spoon, then set the bowls out on countertops and tables throughout your home. You can also use unscented incense sticks to make air fresheners by simply dipping them into essential oils and then lighting them as you would regular incense.

In addition to using these tips and tricks, it's important to call in a pest control expert from a company like Ace Walco & Sons Termite & Pest Control once a year so they can treat your home for mosquitoes and other pesky insects. This will minimize the overall number of mosquitoes you face throughout the year.
